If you have an internal locus of control, then you believe that what happens to you is primarily caused by what you do. In contrast, if you have an external locus of control, you believe that what you do almost doesn't matter since what happens is always caused by someone or something else.
Most likely you'd end up somewhere in between (being Bi-local) - knowing there are things you can control and things you cannot, but probably leaning towards one end either way.
But in my opinion, unlike most things about our personality, it's better if we lean towards an internal locus of control. Mostly because it's just too easy to get trapped into feeling we're powerless to change things.
Coincidentally, as we age we tend to move towards a more internal locus of control. I say coincidentally because it happens just as we have more experiences and have a better idea of just what we're capable of.
Additionally, it may be uncommon to hear rags-to-riches stories. But it's much rarer to hear rags-to-riches stories about people who got rich just by waiting for it.
